Perfumes – Interesting Facts

The word Perfume derives from the Latin words, “per fumum” which means through smoke. Records show that Perfume dates back thousands of years to Egyptian times where they would use perfume as part of their religious rituals. Perfume has evolved over the years and now around the world it is believed that a bottle of perfume is sold every 30 seconds.

There are lots of different types of perfumes on the market today. It’s become a fashionable trait at present for celebrities to partner up with cosmetic companies to develop and create new fragrances. Celebrities such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Celine Dion and Jennifer Lopez have created some beautiful fragrances.

All perfumes, eau de parfum, eau de toilette and eau de cologne are made with ethyl alcohol, the level of essential oils used in the fragrances determines its name. Perfume is the most expensive of fragrances and uses 22% of essential oils. Eau de parfum uses around 15% - 22% essential oils, Eau de toilette uses between 8 – 15% essential oils and finally eau de cologne uses only 4% of essential oils.  The cost of perfumes can vary a great deal depending on what oils have been used. The most expensive perfume in the world today, is Clive Christian No. 1 pure perfume. This is due to the essential oils he uses to create this perfume.

When applying perfume to help the fragrance last longer, it should be applied to pulse points such as the wrists, neck and the back of the knees. Try not to rub your wrists together as this crushes the smell. It should be stored carefully, keeping the lid on and out of direct sunlight and heat.
